October is National Chiropractic Health Month

Crisp air, colorful leaves, overpriced lattes…ah, yes. It’s October once again. You might be gearing up for the pumpkin patch, but we celebrate October differently. This month is National Chiropractic Health Month! Practices everywhere are unifying around a single theme to help us connect with people about health. This year, the theme is “Keep Moving!”

The last couple of years has affected everyone differently, but many people found it tougher to get off the couch and get active. Everyone knows that’s bad for your health – and your mental health. So let’s take this time to get up, get out, and get our heads back in the game about daily exercise and movement.

Let’s “Keep Moving!” Together

This month, we are all about movement, exercise, and a whole-person approach to health. We are experts in drug-free approaches to health, and we know how vital the health of your bones and muscles is to your overall well-being. Without regular exercise or movement, you increase your risk of heart problems, injuries, joint pain, and many other conditions. If you do take a more active approach, you can improve your overall health and well-being. Let’s go over some things that can help you be more active in your daily life!

Work and Working Out

The office isn’t exactly the best place to try to set your personal best bench press, but there are all sorts of ways to give your body a tune-up. Sitting with two feet on the ground is an easy one, and it does a lot to help you keep good posture and evenly balance your weight. Both of these are great for improving or avoiding muscle and joint pain. Another easy one: keeping your computer monitor at eye level to avoid straining your neck.

Light stretching, rolling your shoulders and ankles, giving your body a quick shake-out, all these things can help keep you up and moving. Take the stairs to get the blood moving! Just a few minutes every here and there can make a huge difference.

The Great Outdoors

Being in nature works wonders on stress levels, deflates anxiety, and just makes you feel good! People that exercise outdoors get a double boost of feel-good. Luckily, October is the perfect month to get outside and do some hiking or nature walks. If you can’t get that far outdoors, even walking around the neighborhood can give you some of the same benefits. If you need a little more action, sports like soccer, tennis, or basketball are great to get the blood moving – make sure you know when to rest. If you’ve got any physical health problems, make sure to check in with your chiropractor about healthy ways to exercise and increase movement without aggravating anything.

Bring it Home

You don’t need to live in a mansion with a private workout studio to do a little work at home! There are many options these days with online classes and working programs that help you get the most out of the space – and the time – you’ve got. 30-60 minutes of exercise daily is a good target for adults, but there’s no pressure to get there immediately. It is fall, after all – rake your (and maybe your neighbors’) leaves for a little extra movement!

Strengthening and stretching your muscles through consistent exercise reduces the chance of injuries, strains, and overall muscle pain. For National Chiropractic Month, we’re encouraging ourselves and our patients to get out there and move! Remember – there is no one right way to move and no one right way to exercise. Do what feels best for you at this moment for your body, and that’s it –find what works for you.
